Because rich New Yorkers need to know they are still rich during these tough economic times.
Modern Luxury launches Manhattan in September, which will join San Francisco, DC, Houston, Dallas, Atlantan, Miami and Hawaii in the media group’s glossy cosmo cannon.
From the New York Post:
A new battle for New York is underway, as the well-financed Modern Luxury operation invades the city with a new magazine. Richard Martin, who is currently the editor of Miami, will be heading to New York to be the editor of Manhattan. The first issue of the bi-monthly is set to debut in September, with free circulation of 65,000 mailed to the most affluent households in New York. Full story
To the heights of chutzpah, Modern Luxury has a sense of humor wicked enough to launch a magazine about worry-free cosmo living in NYC while the American economy continues to slope (not that the target readership cares – that would be the point).
Or maybe ML just has bad timing. New York (i.e. Manhattan) is not as cool as it used to be, according to Madonna and Chris Noth, among others, and yes, their opinions are all that matter in this case. What took Manhattan so long to hit the shelves? Why is it the last in ML’s line of 13 city-regional glossies?
New York has been slow to feel the economic crunch because of the wealth distribution. Maybe ML enjoys the cruel irony.
Let us discuss. Send me your thoughts.

Funny this is posted on a day where:
-The DOW dropped 300 points.
-Oil shot up nearly $11, settling at $138.54 a barrel.
-The unemployment rate in the United States was reported as 5.5%, the highest since 1986.
But by all means, wealthy Manhattanites, please continue to wallow in your lack of class, culture, and decency like pigs in shit. I swear, if it wasn’t for the architecture, I’d say bulldoze the upper East and West sides.
